Known Descendants of

Andrew and Agnes Nesbit GIFFIN

Compiled by their 5g-grandson, Donald D. Young

It was not many years after the organization of the Province of Pennsylvania under Willliam Penn that Andrew GIFFIN I settled in Cumberland County in the region of Big Spring on Conodoniquet Creek. In 1701 Penn had gained full control of the region and opened it to settlers. The fact that Penn was a Protestant and pledged religious liberty to all turned the faces of many Scotch settlers to the Province, among them our ancestor. Just when he arrived at Big Spring we do not know, but we are sure that he had settled in Cumberland County prior to the year 1742 as he had already been in the section long enough to court an Irish girl, Agnes Nesbit by name. They were married on March 26, 1742 and spent their lives together in that immediate area.

Presented on the following pages are all of the descendants of Andrew GIFFIN I known to me, as of the last update shown below, along with the available birth, marriage and death dates and places. This information is thought but not guaranteed to be complete and acurate. It has been assembled from a number of different places including "Reunion and History of the Giffin Family Held at McNay's Grove, Sept. 21 1897 and Aug. 24, 1898," Canonsburg, PA, published December, 1898; "The Giffin Family, Pioneers in America Prior to 1742" by Rev. Isaac Boyce, D.D., Canonsburg, PA, published August 24, 1933; information received from various other Giffin descendants; Social Security Death Index; various internet search sites and other published and unpublished sources. I am willing and anxious to share with other descendants, and I am especially anxious to make additions and corrections wherever appropriate.
